A small business owner approached me and said they were going out of business and had a huge supply of drinking straws that he didn’t know what to do with. He asked if I had any use for them and I recalled doing something like this activity in high school. Now I have enough straws to do this project for the next decade.
We have done this a couple different ways. The most successful is to simply have them make structures to hold something. The goal was to make the tallest structure that would still support the weight of a golfball. Every participant received candy, but the group who made the tallest structure to support the golf ball received a larger candybar.
We provide each group with the same number of straws and one role of scotch tape.
