Thumb Pianos

Popular Mechanics featured “8 Step-by-Step Guides for Offbeat DIY Projects,” which had this cool, simple thumb piano. We like to try new projects and had some wood lying around from another project. Click the link to find some great instructions. After the jump we include some tips for the project.

  1. Stapling a screw is not as easy as it sounds. Plus, it isn’t necessary to staple it down. We recommend skipping that step.
  2. Have a hammer ready to make sure the staples are tight against the bobby pins.
  3. Sharpies work well for decorating, especially if you have smooth wood.
  4. Bobby pins have rounded edges at the end. When you cut them in half, it leaves a sharp edge. Make sure the teens have the rounded edges toward them (the side they would play with their thumbs).
